Senior Center Highlight: Glasford

We are always encouraged when we review different communities and discover their vibrant senior centers! Peoria, we will make one together for Peoria!

Glasford Senior Center is located in Glasford, IL. One of Program Coordinators, Christa Fuller lives near Glasford and has found the Senior Center there to be an incredible inspiration.

Glasford Senior Center was established in 1984 by Anna Isaacs. Anna was striving to serve the seniors in the Glasford area.  Anna passed away suddenly January 2022. Her vision continues as her daughter, Jody Kimbrell forges forward in serving her community. There was a time they had support from a state funded organization.  They found this was not a good fit for them so they became independent.  They serve 25-35 citizens each Monday and Thursday, for a healthy lunch.  They have a “potluck” food license so are able to cook the meat at home and then finish food prep and have a shared potluck at each meal.

When looking at the Glasford Senior Center, Christa found them to truly embrace the feeling of community.  Jody helps people get affordable clothing as needed.  She is always keeping her eye out for donations or consignment deals.  They have BINGO before each meal.  They are very welcoming to newcomers. Art therapy is provided by Alpha Park Library.  They also have programs provided by Youth and Family Services, Peoria.

Glasford Senior Center partners with Midwest Food bank and brings 3 truck loads of food to the Glasford residents,  feeding 50 families in the area, as well as their seniors.  Jody is always open to helping anyone in need.  All of the people at the senior center are committed to serving their community.  They are funded by donations from businesses and individuals in the community and surrounding towns.  Jody sends out a letter each year asking for donations.  Jody remembers getting such a large donation they were able to go to the Barn III dinner theatre as a special treat.  They are also able to rent out their building for different non alcohol related functions to generate some revenue.

What an inspiring story of a woman with a compassion to make the lives of older adults better in her community! Each of us makes a difference in this world!
