Weekly Aging with Vitality Programs: “What are they saying?”

One of the most special aspects of reaching out to Peoria residents and engaging them in the movement to create a center for older adults in Peoria is listening to their comments of appreciation. “I’m so happy I came.” “I never miss a week!” “I feel so good after chair yoga.” “We need this!” “Coming here has made all the difference in my life.” “I feel so welcome and special here.” “It is a great place to make friends.”

Social Isolation is at epidemic levels in many countries, especially in the United States. Once someone leaves the workplace, opportunities to gather and socialize with people of like interests become fewer, especially ones that are not costly. Many churches used to provide senior lunches, but those are on the decline. Community-based senior centers are directly impacting social isolation by creating warm, friendly, and caring spaces that offer challenges through fun learning and activities to help everyone age gracefully. We all want to live fuller lives and to be able to continue to live independent lives. Centers encourage physical, mental, and emotional well-being and information about resources to help address needs that were not expected. Graceland Center’s weekly programs are establishing a dependable place to meet new friends, learn something new, and share laughter and ideas. People leave feeling so much more energized by coming. We hope you can join us and be part of our team that is working to create a Monday through Friday center!
